How to read a failed Docker build without guessing

Find the first useful error, separate build failures from runtime failures and give your AI a focused debugging request.

App Cities · 2 min · Updated

A build turns your code into an image that Docker can run. When it fails, the log tells you what happened. The last line may only say that it failed. Look above it for the first useful error. A missing file and a lack of memory need different fixes.

The steps

  1. Identify the failing Dockerfile step and the first error immediately above it. Record the dependency version and command involved.
  2. Check the build context. A file on your laptop may be excluded from the archive or .dockerignore, so it never reaches the builder.
  3. Reproduce with the same lockfile and build command locally. Avoid silently updating every package while debugging one failure.
  4. Send your AI a short sanitized excerpt and the relevant configuration. After the fix, run another build and then verify startup separately.

A common question

Does a successful build mean the app is online?

No. The image still has to start, receive its runtime configuration and pass the deployment's health checks.
